New 2022 BMW X5 M50i Review

New 2022 BMW X5 M50i Review

2022 BMW X5 M50i – The new X5 was one of the first luxury SUVs to hit the market, and each subsequent generation only improved on that successful formula. The X5 2022 is a very luxurious and capable SUV.

Whether you’re looking for performance, premium cabin design, or the latest technological features, the X5 gets it. There’s even a new X5 hybrid plug-in this year.

The range-topping M50i model uses a machine similar to the one found in the X5 M, only decomposed. The model can reach 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and does so while slamming its occupants in luxury thanks to standard Vernasca leather upholstery and heated and ventilated 20-way multi-contour front seats.

The model also gets wireless smartphone charging as standard along with remote start, quad-zone climate control, Wi-Fi hotspots, and a Harman Kardon 16 speaker sound system.

BMW X5 M50i Competitors

Unlike the early days of the X5, however, there is plenty of competition when it comes to mid-sized luxury SUVs for 2022. Mercedes-Benz GLE is the X5’s heaviest rival. It offers many of the same features as well as a wide range of trim and performance variants that line up evenly with what you’ll see in the X5.

There is also a Porsche Cayenne to consider if you are willing to spend more on best-in-class driving vehicles. And if you need more space, the BMW X7 is basically an X5 with more rear passengers and cargo space. But if you like the X5, check out our X5 Expert Ranking to see our in-depth evaluation.

What’s new for 2022?

For 2022, xDrive50i X5 models have been replaced by the xDrive45e hybrid plug-in. The new plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and an electric motor for a total output of 389 horsepower.

The 24.0 kWh battery pack is said to provide up to 30 miles of electric-specific driving range. on the Model 40i, there also received some mild electrification in the form of a 48-volt hybrid system.

Otherwise, the X5 receives only minimal changes, as it now comes standard with SiriusXM satellite radio; The more racist M50i models get a long-distance start and a ventilated front seat.

We like to save almost as much money as we love the great performance, and that’s why we think the xDrive40i is the X5 to buy. With a time of zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, it’s got a sport-sedan acceleration, equipped with all-wheel drive, and is a relative bargain in this price class.

We recommend adding a Premium plan for head-up display, four-zone automatic climate control, remote engine start capability, Harman/Kardon stereo systems, wireless phone charging, and Wi-Fi hotspots.

Interior space for adults in the first and second rows, but the optional third row X5 is only for children. Once inside, residents are presented to cabins lined with high-quality materials, multiple charging points for devices, and — depending on the option chosen — a myriad of luxury features.

Front seats that can be adjusted to power with memory for the driver are standard. All models are equipped with power-adjustable steering columns, heated front seats, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, power rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and adjustable ambient lighting.

Massaging seats, long-distance start, soft-close doors, acoustic glass, leather dashboards, and heated front armrests and steering wheels can make the X5 feel like a high-end luxury SUV but add plenty of dough to the bottom line.

The X5 offers plenty of cargo space. With the back seat in use, we managed to put our 11 carry-on suitcases behind the second row of seats. With the rear seats folded—operations that can be performed either from the side or the back of the SUV—we found room for 26 cases. The Mercedes GLE matches the X5 results in this test, case by case, but the rear seats are not as easy as a stowaway.

BMW X5 M50i Engine

For 2022 there are three different powertrains, each associated with a different X5 model. The X5 wearing a sDrive40i or xDrive40i badge is powered by a turbocharged inline-six 335 hp turbocharged. The plug-in hybrid xDrive45e comes with a turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor that combines for 389 horsepower.

Finally, the V-8 twin-turbo 523-hp M50i allows it to rush up to 60 mph in less than four seconds. All three powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and none of them will leave the driver wanting power in almost any driving situation.

The enhanced X5 ride and stable handling are a huge improvement compared to previous-generation models, as is the steering wheel, which feels more connected and direct but still not exactly what we consider a sport. Q7 still has X5 knocks in this area, but it’s a close match.

Pitch the X5 into a fast corner, and hold on reliably and reward the driver with the missing predictions of the GLE class. And if you need to tow, know that the X5’s maximum towing capacity is a powerful 7200 pounds no matter which machine it has.

X5 M50i Battery

The standard xDrive45e model with a 24.0 kWh battery pack that BMW claims is good enough for up to 30 miles of electric-only driving. The X5 can use batteries to travel up to 84 mph without the need to tap on a gasoline engine. The battery pack can be charged at home at an outlet of 110 volts or 220 volts or at a public charging station.

X5 M50i Fuel Economy

equipped inline-six, the X5 is as fuel-efficient as the four-cylinder version of the GLE class and the boys are more fuel-stingy than the four-cylinder Q7, according to the EPA. With the V-8, its EPA rating dropped dramatically but still matched land Rover Discovery’s supercharged V-6 variant.

However, during our real-world highway fuel-economy testing, only the 40i model outperformed its highway rankings with a result of 28 mpg; The M50i recorded 20 mpg, 2 mpg less than expected. We haven’t had a chance to test the new xDrive45e model yet, but when we do we’ll update this story with results.

BMW X5 M50i Features

The twin 12.3-inch screen adds a contemporary look to the restrained cockpit. One serves as a digital measuring display— a feature that is becoming increasingly common among luxury car manufacturers — and the other provides access to the infotainment system, which runs the latest version of BMW’s iDrive software.

Users can control the system using a variety of methods, including gesture controls, which are less intuitive than just touching the screen or using a rotary knob mounted on the center console. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standards.

2022 BMW X5 M50i MSRP range starts at $82,800.
