New 2022 BMW M340i Redesign
New 2022 BMW M340i Redesign – The 2022 BMW 3 Series represents a modern sports sedan with its comprehensive performance and built-in sophistication. The German brand offers two phenomenal engines for this model— a 255 hp four-cylinder and a straight-six 385 hp — both as quickly as they are refined.
There is also a plug-in hybrid for the green crowd. While we are saddened by BMW’s decision to eliminate the 3 manual transmissions, the perceptive eight-speed automatic is a viable replacement. The fantastic chassis 3 can shift seamlessly from quiet to agile at instantaneous notice.

Unfortunately, the steering—despite being upgraded above previous generations—still lacks the tactlessness that fans once idolized. The 2022 Series 3 fulfills its mission as an entry-level premium sedan with sufficient cabin and luggage space as well as a cleverest of luxury and technology.
Although BMW has not divulged the full list of updates for the 3 series, BMW has announced the return of plug-in-hybrid 330e models.
Compared to the last generation PHEV, the latest version offers several improvements, such as higher top speeds in electric mode (87 mph versus 75), larger batteries (12.0 kilowatt-hours versus 7.6), and longer EPA-rated all-electric ranges (up to 22 miles versus 14).
We prefer gas-powered versions to plug-in hybrids. There is no question that the M340i packs the most performance, but the asking price is too high for us. Instead, we will choose the 330i because of its considerable strength and truly athletic behavior.
Those who want an all-wheel drive can add it for $2000. We’ll complement our example with an M Sport package that brings additional features, unique style bits, and a custom-tuned suspension. Most colors are extra valuable and not all are compatible with the M Sport option, so we’ll choose the beautiful Portimao Blue.
For the cabin, we will choose one of vernasca leather to enrich the interior. We’ll also add a Premium package for blind-spot monitoring, hands-free passive entry, a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, a larger touchscreen, and more.
The Track Handling package optimizes sedan driving through adaptive dampers and improved brakes. Other desirable but affordable options include the Harman/Kardon sound system, heated front, and rear seats, long-range start, power-operated trunk lid, and Wi-Fi hotspots and wireless charging.
2022 BMW M340i Engine
The 3 Series offers two smooth and powerful gas-powered engines. The 330i has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The turbocharged M340i is a 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 385 ponies and 369 pound-feet.
The plug-in hybrid 330e combines a 2.0-liter turbo engine with an electric motor that together produces 288 horses and 310 pound-feet. Our first impression of the 330e revealed a harmonious relationship between gas and electrical elements, and we loved the plug-in’s new Xtraboost function which delivers bursts of power that feel like nitro shots.
Each powertrain is paired with an outstanding eight-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. You can power all four wheels at a price. Unfortunately, manual gearboxes are no longer available. (Purists will have to hang on to the new BMW M3 if they need a stick.)
Buyers can choose between two suspension settings on 3: basic settings or upgrades with adaptive dampers. Our first drive of the G20-gen 3 series was exhilarating. The new car’s newly discovered steering feel provides more road surface information and variable effort than its predecessor but is still less than the iconic early 3rd generation.
The four-cylinder Bimmer proved its worth by winning a comparison test against other sports sedans. We applaud his ability to transition from relaxed and smooth to sharp and cheerful. The 330i also secured its place at the top of its class by thwarting the beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulia in a two-car comparison.
Our long-term M340i is increasingly proving the return of signboards to shape, with outstanding six-cylinder body control and exceptional.
BMW and EPA have released fuel economy forecast only for the 2022 330e plug-in model so far, but we do not expect the figures for the gas-powered version to change from the previous year’s model. Rear-drive 2022 330e all-wheel-drive version, 67 MPGe, and 25 mpg combined.
2022 BMW M340i Specs
The first has an estimated all-electric driving range of 22 miles while the latter can go only 20 miles. The government says the 2020 330i rear-drive produces 26 mpg in the city and 36 on highways; added all-wheel drive dropped those ratings by 1 and 2 mpg, respectively.
The M340i 2022 has an estimated 22 mpg of city and 30 highways regardless of its drivetrain configuration. We tested 330i rear drive on our 200-mile highway route to evaluate real-world mileage, and restore an impressive 42 mpg. Likewise, we did the same test with the M340i all-wheel-drive, which produces 33 mpg.
2022 BMW M340i Interior
Inside, the 3 have a completely modern design with excellent materials and impressive build quality. Nothing feels cheap in series 3, and the controls are well placed. BMW also improves outside visibility, and standard sports seats are well supported and supportive, and they offer extensive customization making it easy to feel comfortable.
Extra car content includes detailed head-up displays, customizable ambient interior lighting, heated front, and rear seats, remote start, and wireless charging. BMW’s digital instrument cluster is a bit cluttered but still interesting. Some may find the stroke counterclockwise a strange tachometer at first, but you get accumulated for it quickly.
The Series 3 has large luggage with power-operated lids available. With 17 cubic feet of cargo space, the gas-powered sedan can load six carry-on suitcases back there and 17 in total with the rear row folded.
By comparison, the Mercedes-Benz C300 sedan holds one suitcase fewer in both tests and the Alfa Romeo Giulia can fit five and 15, respectively. The 330e has less luggage space (13 cubes) because of its battery pack, and we haven’t tested its built-in capacity.
BMW M340i Features
The standard infotainment system runs through an 8.8-inch touchscreen, but the interface can also be controlled with knobs and large buttons on the console or with voice commands. The Live Cockpit Plus feature, which includes navigation, is standard.
For really good things, you should spring to the same-named Live Cockpit Pro package, which increases the size of the touchscreen to 10.3 inches and gives you the latest and most capable iteration of BMW’s iDrive system. Subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspots are optional, but the sedan comes with two USB ports.
Apple CarPlay integration is standard but Android Auto is not available. One interesting option is BMW Gesture Control, which allows the driver or passenger to enter certain commands with hand gestures. It’s newer than helpful, but it will amaze your friends for a few minutes.
BMW M340i Safety
Series 3 2022 has not undergone accident testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
However, the 2020 model gets a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS. BMW is minimal in terms of standard driver assistance technology, providing only advanced collision warnings and automatic emergency braking. Other features are available, though. For example, the Parking Assistance package will practically park the car for you.
