The fourth-generation BMW X5 debuted back in 2018 but only now has a hybrid version launched. It’s worth the wait. The 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e, a plug-in hybrid luxury performance SUV that is not only more powerful than its predecessor but likely more fuel-efficient as well.

BMW realized a few years ago the various opportunities that electrification offers in terms of making the Ultimate Driving Machine a more attractive vehicle for drivers. PHEV X5 2022 is proof.

With several drive modes available, significant towing capacity, a driver assistance system, sport-tuned suspension, and a cockpit layout designed with the driver in mind, BMW’s latest SUV will go head-to-head with the best in this segment and it’s very likely it will be the pack leader.

Of course, this combination of power, performance, efficiency, and technology is not cheap, although this has not slowed down the business. Quite the opposite. The popularity of the American-built X5 only increased over time and the addition of the new PHEV model will certainly boost it.

The new BMW X5 plug-in hybrid 2022 is expected to be more powerful than the version available in previous generations. This generation will have a new 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, an increase over the previous generation of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder one.

BMW X5 Xdrive45e Engine

The new engine combined with a single electric assist motor will produce 389 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. This is an 81 hp and 111 lb-ft torque increase. Power reaches the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It will also have a range of double the only EV due to the larger 24-kWh battery. This is much larger than the previous X5 plug-in hybrid, which has a 12-kWh battery pack. It will provide a range of about 30 miles, up from 14 miles. The gas engine will be in action after that.

The big news under the hood of the X5 hybrid is the exchange of engines. As a replacement for the previous 2.0-liter four-cylinder X5 PHEV engine, there was a 3.0-liter six-cylinder. The move helped the new X5 xDrive45e drive a total of 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque between the gas engine and the electric assistance motor, an 81-horse and 111 lb-ft increase from the old four-cylinder version.

BMW also installed a larger battery, which increases the SUV’s special electric driving range from an estimated 14 miles to 30 miles, where the gas engine kicks in and the powertrain behaves like a normal gas-electric hybrid. The top speed in Electric mode has increased from 75 mph to 84 mph, although a play-clock with that limit may not be the best way to emit more electric miles.

Between the increased EV-only range and the higher operating speed range, the X5 should prove more attractive to wider commuters, more of them likely to be able to reach their offices or run daily tasks without using a drop of gas.

When riders drive the new X5 plug-in hybrid, they feel quite comfortable. It’s also quite practical, given that it delivers 0.8 cubic feet of negligible cargo space to a regular X5. With the rear seat folded, the plug-in loses 1.1 cubic feet compared to the standard model, but again, it will likely go unnoticed in an SUV of this size.

BMW X5 Xdrive45e Top Speed

The speed when in electric mode has increased, jumping from 75 MPH to 84 MPH. It can also go from zero to 60 MPH in 5.3 seconds, or 1.2 seconds faster than previous versions.

Inside the BMW X5, a plug-in hybrid is quite convenient and quite practical. It offers almost as much cargo space as the gas-powered BMW X5, with just 0.8 cubic feet less. When the back seat is folded down, it loses a little more at 1.1 cubic feet less. The batteries located under the floor cut into some cargo space.

The interior is also comfortable. Comes standard with a leather seat with the heating on the front seat. It also has a panoramic sunroof and adaptive LED lights.

BMW X5 Xdrive45e Exterior Design

From the outside, the PHEV X5 2021 looks almost the same as a regular X5. The most noticeable difference is the unique badging and cap cover for external chargers, located above and to the right of the left front wheel arch. A set of 19-inch V-spoke wheels with run-flat tires is standard although buyers have an additional four-wheel package to choose from with wheels up to 21 inches.

A total of 9 non-metallic and metal paint finishes were included, including Alpine White, Carbon Black Metallic, and Manhattan Green Metallic. Other standard exterior features include fully adaptive LED headlights and automatic high beams, and a panoramic sunroof. Depending on the package, options include aluminum trim, Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof, and trailer ride.

Whether you like or hate the fourth-generation X5 exterior style, the new PHEV model won’t change your mind in any way.

BMW X5 Xdrive45e Safety

As we know together, the previous generation X5 Hybrid was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder-battery combo, this new generation received a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six connected to a high-voltage battery. The total output has an impressive 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 81 hp and 111 lb-ft over the old model.

The large torque thrust of the hybrid drivetrain also allows an impressive 7,200-pound towing capacity. And an 8-speed automatic transmission is standard, sending power to all four wheels, although there is a rear-wheel-drive bias.

BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of just 5.3 seconds, which is 1.2 seconds faster than its predecessor. Although official EPA-rated fuel economy figures are not yet available, BMW estimates an all-electric range of 30 miles. The all-electric top speed also increased from 75 mph to 84 mph.

Drivers have three drive modes available: Electric, Hybrid, and Sport. Thanks to the double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension, residents will benefit from a comfortable and sporty driving experience.

Safety features also feature Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Warning, and Front Collision Warning. There is an optional Driver Assistance package that includes Active Cruise Control and Active Side Collision Protection.

X5 Xdrive45e Competitors

2022 BMW X5 Xdrive45e Price
