2022 BMW X6 M50i – The X6 M50i is the most powerful non-M X6 variant, thanks to the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that serves on the X6 M, albeit with less power than that model. with a good blend of subtlety and aggression thanks to the M Sport body kit and unique grey accents on the grille, window trim, and wing mirrors.
It also gets more standard features with the inclusion of Harman Kardon’s 16 speaker audio settings and wireless charging and a 20-way multi-contour front seat and four-zone climate control.
2022 BMW X6 M50i
The BMW X6 crossover has stood in front of the styling curve. Defying convention and practicality, the curvaceous X6 is a close relative of the X5, replacing the crowded rear end for the X5 angle profile. Longer and wider than its predecessor, the mid-size BMW X6 2022 is packed with technology.
Redesigned for the 2022 model year, the next-generation X6 looks sharper and offers more standard features. They include variable damper controls, adaptive LED headlights, blind-spot monitors, lane departure alerts, and twin USB charging ports.
What’s new for 2022?
The X6 2022 range adds some new standard features, drops some old ones, and gets a revised option pack. The most famous new addition is Android Auto, which was previously unavailable and is now standard.
However, BMW eliminated previous acoustic glass options, glass interior control, rear entertainment systems, and night vision with pedestrian detection. The six-cylinder X6 now has a 48-volt hybrid system, and the V-8-powered version adds a standard long-range start and ventilated front seats.
Apart from the burlier sound and gutsy acceleration that the X6 M50i 523-hp provides, we don’t have to spend nearly $20,000 extra on it. Instead, we’ll stick with rear-wheel drive, a six-cylinder X6 40i. Those who want an all-wheel drive can add it for $2300.
We’ll spring for the M Sport package, including a snazzier body kit and exterior trim, an improved exhaust system, sunk suspension, and a unique steering wheel. We will also pay extra to avoid white and black paint colors at no cost.
We don’t think it’s necessary to upgrade to a richer Merino leather upholstery, but we’ll add a Premium package. This includes head-up displays, remote engine start-ups, wireless charging, and more.
The Luxury package is a great value that adds ventilated front seats with power adjustments and massage functions. Our other individual enhancements include a heated armrest and steering wheel, as well as a two-axle air suspension.
2022 BMW X6 M50i Engine
The X6 40i is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six 3.0-liter 335 hp equipped with a 48-volt hybrid system and pairing with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear or all-wheel drive. The M50i has the same transmission and standard all-wheel drive, but the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 is significantly more powerful.
Equipped with 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque helped the rocket from up to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds on the test track. What’s even more surprising is that the X6 M has horsepower up to 617 and is even faster. However, the standard six-cylinder powertrain is much fast and velvety smooth.
Both the X6 40i and M50i also have standard adaptive dampers and wheel sizes ranging from 20 to 22 inches. Our tests of the V-8-powered X6 reveal an impressive cornering grip and stop power. Although the suspension was stronger than the settings found on the six X6 cylinders we tested, it was never punishing. We also appreciate the adjustable steering heft and quiet interior with cruising speed.
BMW X6 M50i Fuel Economy
The EPA estimates the X6 40i rear drive will get 21 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway. The all-wheel-drive version has the same city rating, but its highway figure drops to 25 mpg. The much more powerful Twin-turbo V-8 X6 M50i is rated at 16 mpg city and 22 highways.
While the all-wheel-drive six-cylinder X6 exceeded government expectations on our 75mph highway fuel economy route — part of our extensive testing regimen — gained 29 mpg, the M50i missed its mark by 2 mpg in the same test.
The sloping fastback roof looks more united in its newly restyled and enlarged form, standing further apart from crossovers like rival coupe-like. This is quite a contrast to the related, boxy X5 with its traditional crossover SUV profile.
Slightly longer, lower, and wider than ever, the X6 boasts a sharper nose and a larger, bolder grille that can now be optionally illuminated.
The side of the body does not change much. The lower rear roof meets the small kickup in the rear window. Along the bottom of the door, sharper folds help make the X6 appear lower. The wheelbase has grown by 1.6 inches.

The interior of the X6 looks and feels like most other new BMW products. That means high-end materials and soft-touch surfaces abound, and two large 12.3-inch digital screens dominate the dashboard. While the instrument panel looks slick, the gauges are a confusing mess. Fortunately, the optional head-up display is easier.
The rest of the switchgear is also smartly laid out. BMW gesture controls—which let you control certain functions such as audio volume by waving in front of the infotainment screen—are included but unnecessary. Many standard amenities are also offered, including a power-adjustable 16-way front seat, adjustable ambient lighting, heated front cushions, and passive entry.
While the rear seats are comfortable for two adults, the legroom and headspace shrink by about 2 and 3 inches, respectively, compared to the boxier X5, the X6 also has less cargo volume behind the rear seats.
The standard 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It operates through various functions such as traditional buttons, voice commands, a rotary controller in the center console, and even hand gestures.
The company’s iDrive interface has sharp graphics and immediate response, but some layered menus can be annoying. BMW also offers improvements such as built-in navigation, enhanced USB ports, wireless charging, and Wi-Fi hotspots. The X6 can also be upgraded with premium Harman/Kardon stereos or more premium Bowers & Wilkins units.

The X6 40i ($65,295 with rear-drive sDrive, $67,595 with all-wheel drive xDrive) comes with a turbo-6 engine, 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, panoramic moonroof, 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen heated front seat with Apple CarPlay compatible, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, and a collection of active security features.
The X6 M50i ($86,645) replaces the power of the V-8 for the inline-6 and is equipped only with an all-wheel drive. Improvements include a 20-way power front seat, Harmon Kardon’s 16-speaker system, a three-spoke leather-clad M steering wheel, and an M suspension component.
